Gujarati Moong Dal Khichdi

  • 1 Cup Green Moong Dal
  • 1 Cup basmati rice
  • ½ Litre water
  • ½ Cup ghee
  • 2 Tablespoon oil
  • 1 Teaspoon turmeric
  • Salt
  • 1 Teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 Teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 Dry red chillies
  • 2 Green chilli
  • 1/3 Teaspoon Asafoetida
  • 5 to 6 Curry leaves
  • 7 to 8 Chopped garlic
  • 2 Chopped onion
  • 1 Tablespoon ginger garlic paste
  • 1 Chopped tomatoes
  • 1 Tablespoon red chilli powder
  • 1 Tablespoon cumin coriander powder
  • Chopped coriander


Mix the rice and dal together and wash them in running water for 3 to 4 times. Now add 2 to 3 glass of water in the rice and dal then, add turmeric, salt and ghee and cook the dal rice in a pressure cooker till 4 whistles.

Once it cook switch off the gas.

Now heat a kadai in a medium flame. Add oil. Once oil heated add mustard seed, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves and dry red chilies. Stir it. Add Chopped garlic, chilies and onions. Mix well. Cook the onions till change the colour. 

Now add ginger garlic paste.  Sauté for minute.  Add Chopped tomatoes.  Cook the tomatoes till mushy. Keep the gas on a slow flame.

Now add spices. Add red chilli powder, cumin coriander powder, turmeric, salt and some Chopped coriander.  Mix well.  Keep the lid on kadai for minutes for cooking the masala. Add 1 glass boiled water. Allow to boil.

Now add cooked rice dal mixture into the kadai. Mix well.  Once it mixed, check the taste. Add salt if required. 

As we all know, khichdi need to be soft. So, you can add 1 glass of hot water at this stage. Mix well. And keep a lid on a kadai and allow to cook the khichdi for at least 10 minutes.  Pour 2 tablespoon of ghee on khichdi. Switch off the gas.

Serve this Gujrati khichdi with kadhi and papad.
