  • ½ CupMasoor Dal
  • ½ Cup Moong Dal
  • Achari Masala:
    • ½ Teaspoon Mustard Seeds
    • ½ Teaspoon Methi Seeds
    • 1 Teaspoon Fennel Seeds
    • ½ Teaspoon Carom Seeds
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoon chopped ginger
  • 2 tablespoon chopped garlic
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 5 to 6 curry leaves
  • ½ teaspoon asafoetida
  • 3 to 4 slit green chilies
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon red chili powder
  • ½ Teaspoon turmeric
  • Salt
  • 3 to 4 tablespoon oil
  • ½ liter boil water
  • Chopped coriander
  • For tempering:
    • 1 tablespoon ghee
    • ½ teaspoon mustard seeds
    • ½ teaspoon cumin
    • ½ teaspoon asafetida
    • 5 to 6 chopped garlic


Wash both the dal and soaked for at least 30 minutes in the water.

Till then, will prepare for achari masala. Heat a pan add fennel seeds, methi seeds, mustard seeds and carom seeds. Sauté them on low flame. Switch off the gas. Now grind these dry spices and make fine powder.

Now heat a kadai, add oil. Once oil heated, add cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, chopped ginger garlic and green chilies. Sauté well. Once garlic change the color add chopped onion. Cook the onion till translucent. Now add chopped tomatoes. Mix well. Add red chili powder, turmeric and salt. Mix well.

Now this mixture, add soaked dal. Mix it well. Then, add boiled water. Keep the gas on a medium flame. Boil it till dal cook well.

Once dal cooks, heat the pan for tempering. Add ghee, mustard seeds, asafetida, cumin seeds, and chopped garlic. Cook the garlic till change the color. Now add achari masala into this tadka. Mix well and pour this tadka on the dal. Mix well. Add chopped coriander.

Dal is ready to serve with rice.
