Hydrabadi Khatti Dal.

  • 1 cup Toor dal
  • 2 chopped tomatoes
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoon tamarind water
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt
  • Chopped coriander
  • Water
  • For Tadka:
    • 2 tablespoon Oil
    • 1 teaspoon cumin
    • ½ teaspoon mustered seeds
    • Pinch of asafoetida
    • 2 dry red chilies
    • Curry leaves
    • 1 teaspoon urad dal
    • 5 to 6 garlic cloves


Wash toor dal 2 to 3 times, add water in it. Then, add Chopped onions, tomatoes, slit chilli, red chili powder, turmeric and salt. Cook this dal in pressure cooker.

Once dal cooks, mix it well.  Now heat a deep pot. Add oil. Once oil heated add mustered seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, dry red chilies and urad dal. Mix well. Now add crushed garlic into the tadka. Garlic changes the colour, add boiled dal in it. Mix well. Add water if needed. Allow to boil for 5 minutes.

Add tamarind water and chopped coriander.  Boil it for another 2 minutes.  Switch off the gas.

Serve the dal with rice.
