Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Toor Dal (Pigeon Pea Dal)
  • ½ cup Masoor Dal (Red Lentil)
  • 2 Big size chopped tomatoes
  • ½ teaspoon turmeric
  • Salt
  • 2 to 3 Glass Water
  • 1 Tablespoon Ginger Garlic Paste
  • Chopped Coriander
  • 5 to 6 Curry leaves
  • 2 Slit green chilies
  • ½ Cup tamarind pulp or 2 tablespoon tamarind.
  • 1 Teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • For Tempering:
  • 2 to 3 tablespoon ghee
  • ½ Teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  • ½ Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • Pinch of Asafoetida.
  • 3 to 4 Curry leaves
  • 5 to 6 chopped garlic cloves
  • 2 Dry Red Chilies

Method:

Firstly, take the toor dal and masoor dal in a mixing bowl. Wash them cleanly for 4 to 5 times in a running water. Once it clean, add 2 glass of water and soaked the dals for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes. Add turmeric, salt, ginger garlic paste and chopped tomatoes into the dal and pressure cook it with 4 whistles.

Once dal cook, remove the dal from the cooker. Either with grinder or whisker whisk the dal till become smooth mixture. Add some water if required. Keep the medium or thick consistency. Now transfer this dal into the kadai or pot. Mix well.

Now into the dal add, red chili powder, cumin coriander powder, garam masala powder, green chilies, curry leaves and tamarind pulp. (If you don’t have tamarind pulp then you soaked the tamarind in warm water for 15 minutes and squeeze the pulp from it and use).

Mix well. Now keep this dal on a gas. Keep the gas on a medium flame. Allow to make a nice boil. Once boil come, check the taste of dal. Add salt as required. Keep the gas on a slow flame.

Now on the other side. Heat the tadka pan on a medium flame. Add ghee into the tadka pan. Now add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, Asafoetida, curry leaves, chopped garlic and red chilies. Once garlic and chilies change the color, pour this tadka on the dal. Mix well.

Now add the chopped coriander on the dal. Mix well. Switch off the gas.

Serve this delicious Hydrabadi Khattu Dal with rice and pickle.
